The actual amount of rock will vary depending on the density and size of the stones.
Rather than weighing out an exact amount every time, concentrate on filling the barrel to the proper level and maintaining good tumbling action.
Recommended Rock Size
For the A-R1, rough rock approximately 3/8" to 1-1/2" in its maximum dimension is recommended.
As a general guideline, the largest pieces should be no more than approximately half the smallest interior dimension of the barrel.
Using a mixture of different rock sizes is also beneficial because smaller pieces can move into the spaces between larger pieces, creating more efficient tumbling action.
The Four-Stage Rock Tumbling Process

Stage 1 — Coarse Grind
